Buckeyes & Bearcats Preview

The attention of Ohio will be focused on The Horseshoe Saturday evening at 6pm when the Bearcats of Cincinnati visit the home field of the Buckeyes in Columbus. Many questions surround both teams at this early point in the 2014 campaign, so what can viewers expect.

The Bearcats under Tommy Tuberville lead a passing attack where 8 of their 10 touchdowns have come through the air. They have an excellent passer in Gunner Kiel. He was the top rated QB prospects out of high school that led the nation on a recruiting frenzy, when he committed to LSU and then de-committed so he could commit to Notre Dame. Before playing a down for the Irish, he chose to transfer to Cincinnati where he as been welcomed with open arms. The Buckeye secondary will definitely be tested this week through the air and we will see what improvements Chris Ash has been able to implement.

Defensively, the Bearcats run a 4-2-5. The Bearcats were gashed by Toledo, giving up 240 yards on the ground. The ground game was fixed for the next game against Miami, OH but the Bearcats still had to make a goal line stand to preserve the victory. A victory over a team that has lost 20 straight.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes were very lack luster and vanilla against a very mediocre Virginia Tech team on offense. The Buckeyes will need to establish a good running game with the plethora of backs they have in their stable. Hopefully, Tom Herman has learned and will use the quick passing game and intermediate routes to set up down the field opportunities. The TE has been neglected to this point as well. Hopefully the game plan includes using Jeff Heuerman, Nick Vannett and Marcus Baugh.

Look for Ash and Luke Fickell to play alot of nickel coverage against the Bearcats who will run a lot of 4 and 5 wide sets on offense. Curtis Grant will probably not see much action week, which is good news for Buckeye fans due to his terrible coverage skills. The secondary is loaded with athletes and depth, so hopefully this will be a coming out party for them. The secondary could use a stepping stone of confidence to elevate their play to the next level and what better place than the show against the best in state football team!!
